‘Changpo’ based at Deokpo-ri Tongyeong-si Gyeongsangnam-do is a little village facing the lake alike ocean, surrounded by gentle mountains on the southwest and small islands towards the northeast. The site is located in the middle of the low hillside of Changpo village, with a townscape view of small houses blends into nature landscape and dynamic ocean view. Standing there with mountains to the back and watch the ocean, warm sunshine and sea breeze from south will cover with warmth and recognize to be inside a ‘natural-amphitheater’ where colorful performances are made by nature changing can be seen such as, light, shadow, fog, star, moon and more depending on the season and time. The site is a home to an elderly couple who earned their families living and workplace by cultivating oysters for a lifetime.

The project began when the client was living in a Tongyeong city apartment, with the will of the client to spend their lives where the large bright moon rises every middle of the month. They wanted to be able to take a short break during work at their new house, as it’s a short distance to the oyster farm, and wanted to come ‘home’ to have warm home-cooked meals. As the time of retirement got closer, even though they pass on a lifetime job to their children, but also would hope to be in a close distance to be able to watch over and naturally hand down the long-time experience for rest of their lives. It is not possible to understand every deep intention and dreams the elderly couple had, nevertheless the process of designing this house was by connecting as detailed as possible, the potential elements of the site together with dreams and new daily life of a family after moving in.

The biggest characteristic of this site is that on each different level you are standing gives different senses. At the ground level, it can be held in arms of the overwhelming warmth of sunlight and surrounding mountains towards the south, and when you turn around, the coastal view comes in with small islands like a parametric photo. As you walk up the stairs, the scenery of offshore appears in three dimentions as if you were wearing a 3D glasses, and you can feel the grand scale of nature escalates as you go up. The contours of the different island and strong contrast of each side are visible, and strong sea breeze, which was calm on ground level, blow on your face. Meanwhile, the sunshine shining on the face seems to be warmer as if it were closer to the sun. Along these different types and strengths of senses depending on the level are expected to be linked with various behavior in elderly couple’s daily life, and how to design various of levels by having floor plates (such as charm; stair landing) in this house and focus how the indoor space of underneath those plates changes and creating an outdoor space.

Design of house was to relate dimensional conditions with everyday life activity of the elderly couple. The intention was to relax and enjoy the surrounding natural scenery on various places and levels of the floor plates ‘Charm; stair landing space’ in the house. The house is in ‘U’ shape, opened to the south that forms a small courtyard which creates a cozy outdoor space by overlapping with mountains around the land. To the northeast living room, kitchen and master bedroom arranged parallel to the sea which allows each room to have an ocean view. The smaller interior spaces are extended with adjacent exterior deck or timber floor (daecheong front porch and back porch), which makes a vague inner and outer boundary that gives the impression of expansion from the inside to outside. Considering functional characters of each space at the same time, multiple vertical walls (external walls and partition walls) and openings maintained the privacy along with surrounding scenery to be brought in different size and shaped frames. Finally, inside the ‘Charm: House’, enjoy ‘charm; pretty’ landscapes at numerous levels of ‘charm; stair landing’, whereas for outside the house, expect to settle as a ‘charm; true’ member of Changpo town.

경남 통영 덕포리의‘ 창포’는 남서쪽의 완만한 산과 북동쪽의 아담한 섬들로 둘러싸인, 호수 같은 바다를 마주하고 있는 작은 마을이다. 대상지는 창포마을의 나지막한 언덕 중간 즈음에 자리하여 작은 집들과 자연이 어우러진 마을풍경과 변화무쌍한 바다경치를 입체적으로 감상할 수 있는 곳이다. 그곳에서 산을 등지고 바다를 바라보고 서있으면, 남쪽의 따스한 볕과 바다 바람이 몸을 포근히 감싸고, 계절과 시간에 따라 빛, 그림자, 안개, 별과 달 등 자연의 변화가 만드는 다채로운 공연을 관람할 수 있는 ‘자연-원형극장’에 있음을 인지할 수 있다. 대상지는 한평생 굴양식 작업으로 가족의 생계와 일터를 일궈온 노부부 삶의 터전이다. 통영 시내의 아파트에 살다가, 여생은 보름날 커다랗고 환한 둥근 달이 뜨는 이곳에서 시간을 보내고 싶다는 의뢰인의 뜻에 따라 프로젝트는 시작되었다. 일터인 굴양식 작업장에서 새로운 집이 지척에 있어 일을 하다가 잠시 쉬어갈 수 있으며, 끼니 때가 되면‘ 집’에 와서 따뜻한 집밥을 먹을 수 있길 바랬다. 은퇴 시점에 다다르며 자식들에게 평생의 일을 물려주지만, 오랜 시간 경험하며 터득한 능력을 남은 생 기간에 자연스레 전수되도록 가까운 거리에서 지켜보며 알려주길 바라는 마음도 있었을 것이다.

노부부의 속깊은 뜻과 꿈을 모두 헤아릴 수는 없겠지만, 장소가 가진 잠재적 요소와 입주 후 펼쳐질 새로운 가족의 꿈과 일상을 최대한 섬세하게 그리고 엮어가는 것이 이 주택을 설계하는 과정이었다. 이 땅이 가지고 있는 가장 큰 특징은 올라서는 각각의 레벨에 따라 다른 감각을 느낄 수 있는 것이다. 지층 레벨에서는 남쪽으로 둘러싸인 산과 햇볕의 품에 포근히 안길 수 있으며, 돌아서면 앞바다의 풍경이 작은 섬들과 함께 파노라마 사진 같이 들어온다. 계단을 따라 올라서면 바다의 풍경은 3차원 안경을 쓴 것 같이 입체적으로 다가오고, 높이 올라갈수록 웅장하게 펼쳐지는 자연의 스케일을 느낄 수 있다. 각기 다른 섬들의 윤곽선과 각 면들의 강한 대비감이 한눈에 들어오고, 지층에서 잠잠했던 바닷바람이 강하게 얼굴을 스치운다. 그러나 동시에 해(태양)에는 더 가까이 올라온 듯 더높은 온도의 햇볕이 얼굴을 데운다. 이렇게 레벨마다 다르게 느껴지는 감각의 종류와 정도는 이 노부부의 일상에서 다양한 행위와 연결될 것이라 기대되며, 이 집의 설계는 어떻게 다양한 레벨의(계단‘ 참’과 같은) 판들을 위치시키며 그 하부의 내부공간의 변화와 외부공간을 구성할 것인가에 집중하였다.

집의 설계는 장소가 가진 입체적인 조건과 노부부의 일상 행위를 연결하고자 하였다. 집을 둘러싸고 있는 풍요로운 자연의 풍경들을 집의 곳곳, 다양한 층의‘ 참’에서 쉬고 즐기길 의도했다. 건물은‘ ㄷ’자 형태로 남쪽으로 열리고, 그렇게 만들어진 작은 중정은 대지를 둘러싸고 있는 산들과 겹쳐지며 아늑한 외부공간을 형성한다. 북동쪽으로는 바다와 평행하게 거실과 주방, 부부침실의 공간을 배치시켜 각 공간에서 바다를 바라볼 수 있도록 하였다. 다소 작은 내부공간들은 외부의 인접한 데크나 마루(대청마루, 툇마루)에 연장되며 내외부 경계가 모호하여 내부에서 외부로 확장된 느낌이 나도록 하였다. 동시에 각 공간의 기능적 성격을 감안하여 다양한 수직벽들(외벽, 가벽)과 오프닝들이 프라이버시가 유지되면서 주변 풍경을 다른 크기와 형태의 창(액자화)들로 끌어드리도록 하였다. 마지막으로‘ 참:풍경집’내에서는 다양한 레벨의‘ 참’에서‘ 참:’한 풍경들을 향유하며, 반대로 외부에서는 창포마을의‘ 참:’한 마을 풍경의 일원으로 앞으로 잘 정주하길 기대한다.
