Somebooks Office Building is a complex cultural space with a mixture of creativity and communication. The maximum area of land that can be developed is quite large, but considering the scale of the medium- to long-term space required by the client and the appropriate construction cost, decided to go with horizontal expansion. Considering the structural factors and the composition of the space, vertical expansion would be advantageous. However, upon concluding that the degree of completion of each phase is most important, we decided to construct aboveground on one side, which left much of the site untouched in the first phase.

But, we resolved to complete work on the underground space in the first stage, considering the difficulty of future additional works and to make a structure that assumes a second stage. The site located at the corner of the block, which consists of six lots, was positioned on the inner part of the site to provide adequate space from the intersection. The rest of the land was made to be a grass plot that is visually open from all directions, and this space works as a gap of space in Paju Book City and arbitrates a sense of coziness with the neighboring buildings.

In most cases, the circulation is made to flow naturally in the external space, from the boundary of the site to the entrance of the building in the form of buffering, mediation, and transitioning. However, for this building, we came up with a creative space for the sake of the client’s individuality. The atypical mass is very simple and unique. With the shape like that of cheesecake that has been sliced in many layers, there is an absence of additional elements of a typical building such as an entrance, staircase or a rooftop. The large windows in the front and the masses segmented by the arrangement of concrete and glass make it difficult to quantify the size of the perceived scale.

Before entering the building, visitors see the exterior and anticipate a multi-layered structure. But this building has a single story. Future expansion is one reason, but the building surprises the visitor when they enter the single-story complex hall, in which anything can be imagined, and they lose their sense of direction for a moment as they find themselves in a large, irregular space where nothing is recognized except a hidden stairway leading underground. Anything is possible in a hall. It is easy to communicate with the outside world through the large window in the front, and it is a place where anything you imagine such as exhibitions, performance, learning and creative work is possible; it is a space of special volume which is not often encountered in everyday life.

The shape of the hall is not rectangular, and the floor height is also illogical. The straight iron structure crossing the air to regulate light is reminiscent of a cross, and it is powerful enough to make it seem like a religious space. The stairway to the basement is narrow and long. The one-way staircase creates the image of inflow, and upon reaching the basement, you enter another large hall. The large window facing the narrow and high-walled sunken courtyard overcomes the limit of the underground space and provides a stable environment. The outer stairway leading to the first floor broadens the options of circulation.
