The glamping site is located at the foot of the mountain, about 15 minutes’ drive from Geoje. The client requested a glamping site on the inclined terrain, with a facility for cafes and residence in the entrance area. To utilize the sloped terrain, we made an embankment with retaining walls, and created space for the facilities on the narrow ground between two retaining walls. The site on top of the transitioning retaining walls is good for viewing the surrounding natural landscape. The client wished for this landscape to be the view from the cafe, and the house for two couples to be a small size with a yard.

The existing retaining walls built along the boundary of the sloping road are no longer negative artifacts. Here, it works as a relational factor in the architectural solution. The wall obtains a strong image that conquers the power of the earth and is built into the wall of the building. The building, which has to overcome the sloping walls along the road and the double layer of terrain behind the site, is planned to be a structure reminiscent of large rocks such as natural objects between the retaining walls.

The exterior wall of the building is finished with patterned concrete that connects with the existing retaining wall, and is composed like bricks, a natural material. For circulation, we planned for visitors to enter through the retaining walls or to experience the height of the terrain in a more dramatic way as they climb through the rocks. The distinguishing feature of this site is that you can see the natural environment of the surrounding mountains and the distant city landscape at the same time. By means of the retaining wall structure that overcomes the natural terrain, a natural form is created; the depth of the circulation creates an openness, structuring the contradiction of the site into a single architectural form.

We tried to create a place just like the surrounding nature, an intermediary presence between natural and artificial. Likewise, for the exterior, a natural linear shape was formalized to make a semi-artificial form, and sloping walls of the roof and site overlap each other to create a naturally-sloping rock that blends in with nature. The architecture, which sits on a slope, has a variety of frames containing natural and urban scenery. A frame made by stairs that cuts across nature and architecture; a frame between retaining wall and architecture or between to pieces of architecture; a frame made by the courtyard of a ‘ㄷ’ shaped house; a frame made by a deep eave. As such, the typical elements of architecture (stairs, walls, courtyards, and eaves) do not just play a functional role, but also become a scenery that blends in with their surroundings, inside and out.
