In the vicinity of Kim Gwang-seok Street in Daegu, which is an up and coming area visited by young people and tourists, there was plot of land left unplanned for a long time. The main cause for this would most likely be its ambiguously sized plottage and its location, which is hidden behind buildings making it unnoticeable from the street. Omonan aimed to bring vitality to the streets through a three-dimensional design that fully respects these limited conditions.

On the first and second floors is a hair salon managed by the owner; the third floor is for lease and the owner’s three family members reside in the third and fourth floors. The staircase that wraps around the building was designed to make the best use of the limited land, and pursues both form and function. The commercial space on the first and second floors is a duplex layout, efficiently arranging the space and emphasizing a sense of open space with its high ceilings. The large window in the facade is used as a means of drawing in limited sunlight into the lower floors.

The terrace and the commercial space on the third floor, which emphasize the horizontal elements dividing the upper and lower floors, are intermediary spaces between the commercial and residential spaces. The residential spaces on the fourth and fifth floors also have the same three-dimensional feel as the overall design. The U-Glass used for the living room conceals it from the outside and absorbs plenty of light during the day to create a warmer space. At night, light is emitted from the interior to the exterior, creating a contrast between night and day.

The skylight in the 5th floor staircase is installed in a slanted roof, letting in plenty of light into the house and making the space more three-dimensional. From the open rooftop of Omonan, one can enjoy a panoramic view of the city. If we approach such relatively unappreciated, smaller plots of land with not just an economically logical approach, but also with new perspective, we may be able to create new opportunities for small, yet efficient architecture.
