St. Mary´s Seashore Church is situated on the shore of the German North Sea coast, separated only by a dyke from the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site of the Wattenmeer mudflats. The bird´s eye view reveals the simplicity of the spatial topology: a classical cruciform plan combined with a rectangle nave (21x30m).

The exterior walls of the cruciform rise up and create the typical concavely curved roof. The roof has a height of 13m in the area of the altar, while in the opposite side it measures 20m and makes space for the bell tower.

The three determinant elements of the building: the rectangular base, the cruciform space and the curved roof surface create a complex building which adapts in the environment of the village scenery and the sea with the dyke. The facade is made of special bricks lying in a wild bond.

Suited to the extreme weather conditions of the coast, the bricks were fired according to a traditional procedure a second time, so that extrinsic oxygen is excluded from the oven and, as a result, the firing extracts the oxygen inherent in the material. The result is a special appearance. The brick turns black and takes on a blue-green, or sometimes even silver sheen like a peace of gleaming iron and salt deposits in the bricks may crystallize one the surface.

The exterior walls consist of a double-leaf construction with supporting concrete wall. Up to 17.50m, the bricks form a curtain facade. The rest 2.50m of the wall connection is bild with a prefabricated concrete element with bricks formwork.

In this way the walls continue with the special geometry to the very top. Lighting is a decisive element of the concept. Owing to the special geometry, the roof beams create a colorful play of lights forced by the coloured glass elements and the daylight. A liquid pattern of light and shade is scattered all over the interior.
