All climates like exceptions. Warmer when it is cold. Cooler in the tropics. People do not resist thermal shock well. Nor do works of art. Such elementary observations have influenced the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
It wishes to create a welcoming world serenely combining light and shadow, reflection and calm. It wishes to belong to a country, to its history, to its geography without becoming a flat translation, the pleonasm that results in boredom and convention.
It would like to intensify the fascination of exceptional encounters. Discovering an archipelago constructed on the sea is unusual. As is the fact that it is protected by a parasol creating a shower of lights.
The possibility of going ashore or of finding a pontoon to access the shore on foot is equally extraordinary, as is being welcomed there as a visitor wanting to browse unique collections, linger in tempting bookstores, or taste local teas, coffees, and delicacies.
It is a calm and complex place. A contrast of a series of museums cultivating their differences and their authenticities. It is a project founded on a major symbol of Arab architecture: the dome.
But here, with its evident shift from tradition, the dome is a modern proposal. A double dome 590 feet (180m) in diameter, flat, perfect radiating geometry, randomly perforated woven material, creating a shadow punctuated by bursts of sun. The dome gleams in the Abu Dhabi sunshine.
At night, this protected landscape is an oasis of light under a starry dome. The Louvre Abu Dhabi thus becomes the end of an urban promenade, a garden on the coast, a cool haven, shelter from the light of day and evening, its aesthetic consistent with its role as a sanctuary for the most precious works of art.
루브르 아부다비
날씨는 예외적 상황을 좋아한다. 추워야 할 계절에 따뜻하거나 열대지방에 추위를 선사해준다. 사람들은 그러한 기후 충격에 취약하다. 그것은 예술 작품도 마찬가지다. 이러한 기초적 관찰은 루브르 아부다비 박물관 설계에 영향을 주었다.
박물관은 빛과 그림자, 반사상과 고요함이 자연스런 조화를 이루는 친근한 공간이 되기를 바랐다. 아울러 평범한 해석 즉, 지루하고 관습적인 용법을 배제한 채 그 나라, 역사, 지형의 일부가 되고자 했고, 예외적인 경험의 매력을 강조하고 싶었다. 해상에 건설된 군도를 보는 것은 흔치 않은 일이다.
더욱이 그 군도는 빛을 쏟아내는 파라솔의 보호를 받고 있다. 해안에 상륙하는 것이나 배다리를 걸어서 해안에 도달하는 것 모두 매우 귀한 경험이다.
그곳은 특별한 소장품을 둘러보거나, 매혹적인 서점에 머물거나, 지역의 차, 커피 또는 진미를 맛보기 원하는 방문객을 반갑게 맞아준다. 그 곳은 고요하지만 입체적인 공간이다. 서로 대비를 이루는 일련의 박물관 시설들은 자신만의 개성과 고유성을 일구고 있다.
박물관은 아랍 건축의 대표 상징인 돔을 기초로 하고 있다. 하지만 전통에서의 적극적 탈피를 시도한 박물관의 돔은 현대적 디자인을 보여준다. 지름 180m의 이중 돔 구조, 평평하고 완벽한 원 형태, 강렬한 햇빛 사이사이에 그림자를 드리워주는 다공질 직물 소재. 돔은 아부다비의 태양빛 아래 환하게 빛난다.
밤이 오면 이러한 풍경은 별을 품은 빛의 오아시스가 된다. 그렇게 루브르 아부다비는 도시 산책로의 종착지이자 해안 정원, 시원한 안식처, 낮과 저녁의 태양을 가려주는 피난처가 되고, 박물관의 미적 언어는 최고의 예술 작품을 위한 성역이라는 박물관의 역할을 잘 표현해준다.
