The Hanok where we had lived seems to tell that an architecture is not necessary to be a main character. It has shown that being a context can be good enough and interact with the nature multi-directionally without a blow. The W House wanted not to have an unilateral shape, but to have a continuous change through the multi-directional communication. Because the main agent of the continuous change is the nature, having a continuing transform only with the architecture is very difficult without having an interaction with the nature. The fact that the dependent upon the nature, which is obvious, can be felt fresh, but, the recognizing it deeply makes us to have a courage to depend on the nature and to empty spaces. Located in Gyeongju that is the city of cultural heritage the site is surrounded by cultural properties and buildings that are built in the Hanok style, experiencing the cultural symbolism in the city. The site is wide, having a gentle slope to the south, and have a view of faraway the mountain Byuckdo.

The building was arranged lengthily to the south, and protrusions at the south and north facade provide a stable garden and backyard and a definite directionality of the building and the neighborhood. Being centered by the southern yard, the main rooms were arranged intensively, and the open windows were installed to the south. At the north side, the service area offers the convenience and independence of the main rooms. The corridor between the main rooms and the service area brings the natural light which distinguishes the both spaces and is always filled with the light whenever one is passing through the path. The eaves were created with the similar ratio of the Hanok eaves. The long eaves at the south controls the long-lasting strong light, and it also plays functional roles like connecting the interior and the exterior spaces, and so on.

The form-flexible eaves embrace the surrounding mountain terrain with the soft and elegant lines like the Hanok’s eaves, so that the building is integrated with the surroundings, attracts the landscapes into the building, and becomes a part of the landscapes. In order to have a detailed relation with the surroundings, the curves that have the same size with the Hansik amkiwa (a style of Hanok’s roof tile) were patterned into the surface of the exposed concrete. The various perspectives of the amkiwa pattern induces the transformation of the building. Also, the movement of the light is projected into the shadows by the amkiwa pattern, and delicate distinction between curves makes the existence and the movement of the light more clear. The interdependent relationship that the movement of the light is expressed via the architecture, and the architecture is represented via the light will be lasting as long as the building exists. The W House stopped predicting and started to accept the change with the nature.
