Health care is not just about treating illness; it is the whole-cycle care of individuals, including pre-care and post-care. In broader terms, the ultimate goal is “to build a healthy community”. The site is located within a dense area of commercial facilities in Yangyang-gu, Incheon, and there is a park situated on the north side. In this place that is the center of this area, we put together a complex medical facility with specialized hospitals of each field, and planned a community-friendly hospital that is open to the community and connected with the surrounding greenery.

Based on this spirit, Mediplex Sejong Hospital not only has a strong presence among surrounding buildings, but also provides open space to the public. A transparent lobby that exposes several floors invites the surrounding natural environment and community into the buildings. In addition to the hospital’s original medical functions, it also provides cultural spaces, large-scale galleries, and other convenient spaces where artwork can be found. We aimed for a Medical Complex space where community and the individual, city and nature, community and wellness can join in harmony.

According to the initial master plan that takes into account the expansion and growth of the hospital, the building was arranged adjacent to the park on the north side. As for the form of the building, programs were grouped together to shape independent masses. The interior is planned to achieve functional integration, and clear, concise masses and materials were used to articulate the image of complex medical facilities for the exterior. While creating a sense of unity as a whole through the variation of vertical patterns, each mass is given a distinct personality by making full use of the material’s characteristics.

As a space where an assortment of complex programs and activities of complex medical facilities exist, the lower part is portrayed by a gradually changing pattern on the elevation, which is an abstraction of the change in activities gradually spreading out from the public space. The ward, where the most repetitive actions take place, consists of a structured elevation with simple details that underline repetition.

Further inside the building, it is easy to see eco-friendly spaces that attract their surrounding environment inside. The three-story atrium lobby, courtyard for ward patients, various roof gardens planned for different patients on each floor, and separate resting spaces for the staff provide a bright and pleasant interior environment, resulting in better quality medical service provided by the staff and a better healing environment for patients.

In addition to these aesthetic and refined space plans, the building has been designed with the aim of creating the best possible medical space, in consideration of recent issues of patient safety and infection control. Isolation zones and access control zones were established in the emergency centers and wards, and a One-Way Process was implemented by planning for clear separation of clean areas and contaminated areas in all areas of the hospital.

We implemented an integrated nursing and care service in the entire ward to create a pleasant and comfortable healing environment for patients.

Furthermore, we planned a progressive hospital that prevents infection and can improve hospital-visiting culture. In addition, the standard room of the entire ward is a 4-bed room, and glass walls are placed between the beds of all wards and intensive care units to provide the best and safest healing environment.

We hope our efforts of building an open hospital that provides the best medical services and communicates with the community will contribute to the making of a healthy community.
