Hotel ORA is an airport hotel, a new type of hotel that is unlike a typical hotel. In general, hotels and their support facilities are located south of the airport, whereas the site of Hotel ORA faces the western border of the airport. General guests will stay, but the main guests are foreign tourists traveling in groups or airline crew members. Therefore, most guests arrive at the hotel by bus. Because the site’s shape was narrow on the side facing the road and long on the other side, the most efficient system was to have the bus go through the building at the ground floor to pick up and drop off guests. To achieve this, a space with the span of 20m raised by pilotis was required for guests to get on and off at the ground floor. A structural solution for this space was the starting point of this project.

Being in the vicinity of the airport, there was also a height limit of 52m above the sea level. After reviewing various structural systems, it was decided to install a steel truss structure on the roof layer and to hang the load of the upper part of the pilotis from the truss above. In order to reduce the load hanging from the truss, the most reasonable choice was to use a lightweight steel frame or metal finishing material for the foundational structure or finishing material of the upper part.

The simple yet three-dimensional exterior created by the plane of even and odd-numbered levels crossing is finished with a stainless steel plate, making a building with various expressions depending on the surrounding light conditions. From the room facing the airport, guests can see the second government office building currently under construction, as well as the takeoff and landing of airplanes. From the opposite side, the rooms facing the mountains offer the view of a completely different rural landscape.
