When man and woman go on a trip, they show very different patterns from the beginning of travel. Once they get to the hotel, most men throw their suitcase on the floor and just want to go out and have fun. Women on the other hand unpack and setup their makeup and personal belongings inside the hotel bathroom. They also organize their clothing in closet, so it wouldn’t get wrinkled. In other word, woman builds their territory even if they only stay there for a while.

Such differences in behaviors regarding travel are critical element to consider when designing a hotel. And this was what worried us the most when transforming Hanok, a traditional Korean-style house, into accommodation. Hanok traditionally does not include bathroom or concept of toilet in its main building. We focused on the attribute of travelling instead.

Considering the relation between life style, convenience, and high cost of guest at high-end boutique hotel or resort, we have concluded that even as a traditional Hanok, the importance of experience cannot overcome the convenience and mental stability that female guests get by building their own territory.

And to conclude, the most important concept of ‘Gurume’ resort is to build a comfortable traditional resort that guest wants to come back by integrating modern convenience into beautiful tradition.

In order to achieve this concept, matching each room with modern design bathroom was the number one priority at the design stage and considering the characteristic of Hanok, where frequent opening and closing occurs, a window that provides good ventilation and external illumination is installed in bathroom, which will allow guests to enjoy the scenery while ensuring their privacy.

Also, Hanok has some mystic elements.

For example, solutions for ventilation, humidity control and cooling and heating performance, which are naturally formed in Hanok using traditional technology, are sufficiently accommodated. In addition, modern technologies, such as interior light control and dimmer or the locking mechanism with smart key, are actively introduced with minimal exposure to provide our guest both convenience and safety without ruining the mystical image of Hanok.

In short, Hotel ‘Gurume’ is a boutique hotel built with an exterior of an old house and modernized interior like two faced Janus. When the visitor opens storm window and push out awning window, they can have unique multisensory experience from the layer formed with building of the past and present. Written by Chanjoong Kim
