Niihama City Museum and Niihama City Museum of Art AKAGANE MUSEUM

<The Akagane Museum> represents a new style in the vanguard of museums today. With an art museum at its core, it incorporates 250-seat small theater, the Taiko-dai Museum (housing the large floats used in an annual Niihama festival), an arts studio, and both indoor and outdoor stages.

The first floor, raised slightly from the surrounding land, is easily accessible via gentle slopes from street intersections at the four corners of the site, and the building exterior makes it clear to the visitor that it is possible to walk through to the other side. Its three floors are connected by the central atrium, with three art galleries located on the upper floor, the small theater on the lower floor, and spaces for Niihama’s local cultural history and art studios on the main floor. We sought to create a space for “Integrated Culture” where the plastic arts, music, theater, and local culture can merge. In an effort to propose a new type of building for public spaces, there is no clear front or back. This design is intended to encourage people to casually drop in from whatever direction they choose.

The building’s copper exterior symbolizes old copper mines. The copper was the foundation of Niihama’s development and prosperity, and we selected this material for the exterior of our landmark building for its expressiveness. Intentionally no surface treatment was applied, and we look forward to the gradual changing of its color and texture with the passage of time.
